TL;DR

  • AI grounds local answers in Google Business Profile, Maps, and review platforms, not your homepage copy.
  • Gemini's Maps grounding reads user review text as source material, not just star averages.
  • Ranked as five priorities a small team can actually execute; schema comes fifth.

AI SEO for local business means getting AI assistants to name your business when people ask a location or 'near me' question. It makes a physical or service-area business retrievable, accurate, and well-reviewed enough that Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini, Ask Maps, ChatGPT, and Perplexity recommend it.

It leans on the same signals as local SEO: a complete Google Business Profile, fresh reviews, and consistent local data. This guide explains how AI answers local intent in 2026, then gives an evidence-graded playbook for getting recommended.

How do AI assistants answer local questions in 2026?

Local AI answers are grounded in the local data layers you already control, not a new mechanism. Google's local index, Business Profile and Maps, Bing Places, and cross-web reviews feed the answers people see.

Each engine leans on a different data provider, so getting recommended means covering all of them. Here is what grounds each surface.

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews

These run on core Search plus Gemini, so they reuse Google's local index and Business Profile and Maps data. AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users by Google I/O 2026.

It now handles agentic local tasks: checking real-time pricing and availability, finding appointment slots, and even calling businesses. Our guide to optimizing for Google AI Mode covers the tactics.

Gemini and Ask Maps

Gemini grounds local answers on Google Maps through the Ask Maps experience. Ask Maps, launched March 12 2026, analyzes over 300 million places, including reviews from more than 500 million contributors.

Grounding with Google Maps reached general availability on September 26 2025 and covers 250 million-plus businesses and places. A 'near me' query resolves through the user's latitude and longitude. See our guide to optimizing for Gemini.

ChatGPT search

ChatGPT search runs on Bing's index, so Bing Places feeds its local answers. It corroborates across review and directory sources like Yelp, Trustpilot, Wikipedia, and Reddit. The exact data-provider mix is undocumented, so treat it as Bing-backed with cross-web corroboration.

ChatGPT names only a handful of businesses per answer, so getting picked is competitive. SOCi's 2026 analysis found ChatGPT recommends only about 1.2 percent of 350,000-plus locations, and roughly 83 percent of restaurants never appear. Our guide to getting cited by ChatGPT goes deeper.

Perplexity

Perplexity runs a live web search and cites its sources inline. For local queries it pulls from Yelp, Google Maps data, Tripadvisor, and vertical directories like Angi, Zocdoc, and Houzz.

Are AI answers replacing the Google local pack?

Only partly, and the local pack is not disappearing. AI Overviews appear on a minority of local-intent queries and vary by intent, while the local pack persists for many navigational and transactional 'near me' searches.

AI answers and the pack coexist, so the real risk is the coverage gap: being absent from AI answers, not the pack going away. One local-SEO study found 28.5 percent of businesses in Google's Local Pack were missing from Google AI Mode for the same query.

Zero-click behavior raises the stakes. Pew Research found that when an AI summary appears, the click-through rate falls from 15 percent to 8 percent. Only about 1 percent of users click a link inside the summary.

So the goal is not to defend the pack. It is to make sure AI names you whenever a local answer appears.

What is the strongest local AI playbook?

Start with the signals that have the most evidence behind them. These are the same local signals AI reuses, ordered by impact.

For the full framework, see our complete answer engine optimization playbook.

Complete and verify your Google Business Profile

This is the highest-confidence local lever and the master record AI reads. Your Google Business Profile feeds AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini, and Ask Maps. Google says local results are based on 'relevance, distance, and prominence,' and a complete profile improves relevance.

Fill every field accurately: categories, hours, service area, attributes, and photos. Accuracy matters more than volume, because these details answer the sub-questions AI asks.

Earn, refresh, and answer reviews

Reviews are the cross-platform signal ChatGPT and Perplexity read to corroborate you. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, though it never publishes the exact weight. Reviews also feed the review sites AI cross-checks.

The consumer bar is high. BrightLocal's 2026 research found 97 percent of consumers read reviews, 68 percent require at least 4 stars, and 74 percent prioritize reviews from the last 3 months.

Respond to reviews, keep them fresh, and never buy them. Freshness and authenticity are what make the corroboration trustworthy.

Keep NAP consistent across the platforms AI reads

NAP means your name, address, and phone number stated identically everywhere. Keep it consistent across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, and Yelp. Consistency helps engines resolve you to one entity instead of several.

This is entity resolution, the same idea behind entity SEO for AI. But do not oversell citation volume.

Google says seeking inauthentic 'mentions' is not as helpful as it might seem, and that there is 'no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.' Fix accuracy on the major platforms rather than chasing hundreds of citations.

Get into the directories AI cites

For AI, you need more than Google. ChatGPT is Bing-backed, so Bing Places feeds it, and the Apple ecosystem reads Apple Business Connect. Perplexity cites Yelp, Tripadvisor, and vertical directories.

This matters because ChatGPT outdraws Google AI Mode for local recommendations among AI users. BrightLocal's 2026 data put ChatGPT at 31 percent and Google AI Mode at 23 percent, and 63 percent of active AI users trust AI recommendations.

Where do content, crawling, and schema fit?

These three tactics matter, but each comes with a caveat. Two are solid, and one is oversold as an AI-citation lever.

Publish localized content that answers sub-questions

Engines fan a local query into sub-questions, so answer them directly. Cover what you do, where, your hours, pricing tier, service area, and whether you are open now.

Clear answers to these are what AI extracts. Avoid thin, templated 'service in city' pages produced at scale, which risk Google's scaled-content-abuse policy.

Stay retrievable for AI crawlers

AI answers only include pages their bots can fetch and read. Allow the retrieval bots: Googlebot feeds AI Mode and AI Overviews, alongside OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Blocking them removes you from those answers.

Most AI crawlers do not render JavaScript, so server-render your NAP, hours, and service details as HTML. Our guide to allowing AI bots in robots.txt has the details.

LocalBusiness schema: helpful, not an AI-citation lever

Use LocalBusiness schema for Google's comprehension and rich results, not to get cited by AI. Schema helps Google understand and disambiguate your business and can make you eligible for rich results. But Google says structured data is not required for generative AI search.

The strongest test, a difference-in-differences study on about 1,885 pages, found effects indistinguishable from zero for ChatGPT and AI Mode, and a small negative effect on AI Overviews. So implement it for Google and rich results, and do not sell it as a way into AI answers.

For correct implementation, see our guide to schema markup for AI search.

How do you build prominence and measure results?

Prominence is Google's own word for real-world notability. It comes from local press, local links, and simply being a known name in your area.

You cannot buy it, and inauthentic signals do not help. Genuine notability is what raises the prominence half of relevance, distance, and prominence.

Measure per platform, because AI answers are unstable. Identical repeated queries return a Jaccard overlap of just 0.34 to 0.42, so track each engine across 5 to 10 runs before trusting a number.

Adoption is rising fast: BrightLocal reported 45 percent of consumers used AI to find a local business in the past year, up from 6 percent a year earlier. Learn how in our guide to measuring AI visibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ChatGPT recommend my local business?

Yes. ChatGPT's local answers run on Bing's index and Bing Places, and it corroborates across review sites like Yelp and Trustpilot. But it names only a few businesses per answer. SOCi found it recommends just about 1.2 percent of more than 350,000 locations, so competition for a mention is fierce.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI answers?

Strongly. Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini, and Ask Maps all ground their local answers on Google's local data, and your Business Profile is the master record. Ask Maps alone draws on more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors. A complete, accurate profile is the highest-impact move you can make.

Do reviews matter for showing up in AI and local?

Yes. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, and reviews are the cross-platform signal ChatGPT and Perplexity read. Consumers demand them too: BrightLocal found 97 percent read reviews and 68 percent require at least 4 stars. Google's own share as a review-discovery source fell from 83 to 71 percent year over year.

Is 'near me' still relevant in AI search?

Yes. AI engines resolve 'near me' using device coordinates, not just the words on your page. Google's Grounding with Google Maps explicitly uses the user's latitude and longitude for local queries, and it covers more than 250 million businesses and places. So accurate location data and service-area settings still decide whether you qualify.

Will LocalBusiness schema get me cited by AI?

There is no proven effect. The strongest test, a difference-in-differences study, found roughly zero impact on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and a slightly negative effect on AI Overviews. Google also says structured data is not required for generative AI search. Use schema for Google's comprehension and rich results, not as an AI-citation tactic.

Are AI answers replacing the Google local pack?

Only partly. AI Overviews appear on a minority of local-intent queries, and the local pack still shows for many transactional 'near me' searches. The two coexist. The real risk is being absent from AI answers: one study found 28.5 percent of Local Pack businesses were missing from Google AI Mode for the same query.

Do I need Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, not just Google?

For AI, yes. ChatGPT runs on Bing's index, so Bing Places feeds its local answers, and the Apple ecosystem reads Apple Business Connect. This matters because ChatGPT outdraws Google AI Mode for local recommendations among AI users, at 31 percent versus 23 percent in BrightLocal's 2026 data. Claim and complete both profiles.

Should I pay for bulk local citations to rank in AI?

No. Google is explicit that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and that seeking inauthentic mentions does not help as much as it seems. Bulk citation-building is oversold. Fix your NAP accuracy on the major platforms AI actually reads, then earn genuine reviews and local prominence instead.

Where Unveilr fits

Local AI signals drift. Your hours change, reviews age, a competitor with a similar name appears, and the platforms describe you differently over time. That is why local AI visibility is a cycle, not a one-time setup.

Unveilr runs that cycle: it scans how AI engines answer your local prompts, detects where you are missing or misdescribed, updates the profiles and content that fix it, and re-scans to confirm movement. In one case, a D2C brand moved from the ninth most-cited domain to the single most-cited source in AI answers, with its ChatGPT visibility rising from 3.3 percent to 44.7 percent.
