An SEO audit checks whether your pages can rank. An AEO audit checks whether your passages get retrieved, quoted, and credited inside an AI answer. The overlap is roughly two thirds, and the third that differs is where most sites are failing right now.
They are not competing methods. An AEO audit assumes the SEO basics already hold, so a site that fails a standard technical audit fails this one too. Usually for the same reason.

What do both audits share?

Why does the shared layer come first?
Retrieval cannot happen on a page a crawler never fetched. So every AEO finding you will ever produce sits downstream of the access and indexation checks that a standard SEO audit already runs for you.
The overlap is structural, not incidental. Google documents that its AI features run on the same core ranking systems as organic search. The signals feeding one audit largely feed the other.
If your standard technical audit is failing, stop there. Fixing passage structure on pages that return errors changes nothing. Common enough a mistake to be worth stating plainly.
What does an AEO audit add?

How do you test retrieval and citation?
The core addition. You run a fixed prompt set across the answer engines and record whether your brand is named, whether your page is credited, and who took the slots you lost.
Nothing in a rank tracker observes this. A page can hold position 3 in organic search and appear in zero AI answers. No traditional report will show you that gap.
Which crawlers do you check beyond Googlebot?
An SEO audit checks whether Googlebot can reach your pages. An AEO audit checks a longer list, because the answer engines run their own agents under their own rules.
GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended are each governed separately in robots.txt, with the current names listed in OpenAI's crawler docs and Google's crawler overview. A site can be perfectly open to Googlebot and closed to all five.
How is passage structure assessed?
SEO audits assess pages. AEO audits assess the paragraphs inside them, because engines lift passages rather than documents.
The test is whether a block of text can be pasted into an answer with no surrounding context and still make sense. That is the whole bar.
Structured data is read differently too. An SEO audit asks whether markup earns a rich result, while an AEO audit asks whether the same markup helps a machine understand the entity behind the page. Both fail the same way when the markup stops matching the visible page.
What do third-party pages say about you?
An SEO audit looks at backlinks. An AEO audit reads what those third-party pages actually say about you, because engines build their description of your brand from them.
Wrong pricing or a former product name on a directory listing will surface in answers regardless of what your own site says. No equivalent check exists in the older method.

What does the SEO audit still catch?
Worth saying clearly, because AEO coverage has been oversold. Several failure modes still show up only in a traditional audit.
Duplicate content and canonical conflicts, redirect chains, crawl budget waste on faceted URLs, Core Web Vitals regressions, and internal link architecture all remain SEO findings. None of them surface from a prompt set.
Indexation is the clearest example. A page missing from Google's index can still be fetched and cited by an answer engine. So the two audits can disagree about the same URL and both be right.
Skipping the SEO audit to run only an AEO one is the mirror image of the mistake most teams make now. Both leave a real gap.
Do you need both?
Yes, but not as two separate engagements. Run one audit with two output sections. The inputs overlap heavily and the fixes usually land on the same pages anyway.
What order should you run them in?
Four stages, in this order:
- Technical access, covering both crawler families in one pass
- Indexation and page health, the standard technical layer
- The prompt set, run across every engine that matters to you
- Passage structure and entity checks, on whichever pages the prompt set flagged

Are AEO, GEO, and AI SEO audits the same thing?
AEO audit, GEO audit, AI SEO audit, and AI visibility audit are used interchangeably by most providers. All four measure the same answer engine optimization work, and the label mostly signals which term a provider markets under.
Where a real distinction is drawn, it is usually that AEO covers direct answers across every answer surface including featured snippets, while GEO refers specifically to generative engines synthesizing and citing you.
For buying purposes, ignore the label and read the method section. Which engines are tested, how many prompts, whether crawler access beyond Googlebot is checked.
