Quick Answer: AI search statistics for 2026 show ChatGPT above 1 billion weekly active users and Google AI Overviews at 2.5 billion monthly users. Half of US adults now use AI chatbots, and Google users click a result on 8% of searches with an AI summary against 15% without one. Citations stay rare: a source appears in under 7% of ChatGPT prompts.
Every figure below links to the organisation that produced it: OpenAI, Google, Pew Research Center, Similarweb, Adobe, Reuters, TechCrunch or the Content Marketing Institute. Nothing comes from an SEO tool vendor's own study, and nothing is quoted from memory. Where a number has a date, the date travels with it, because most of these series move every quarter.
The statistics are grouped by theme so you can pull the one you need for a deck or a budget memo. Read the caveats at the end before comparing a survey figure with a platform-reported one; they measure different things.
How many people use AI search in 2026
About half of US adults use AI chatbots, and generative AI sites drew 9.5 billion monthly visits worldwide over the year to May 2026. The figures come from Pew's representative panel and Similarweb's traffic panel.
- 49% of US adults use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024, per Pew's February 2026 survey.
- 24% use a chatbot daily, including 12% several times a day and 4% "almost constantly", Pew found.
- Searching for information is the most common chatbot use at 42% of US adults, ahead of work tasks at 38% of employed adults, per the same report.
- 63% of adults under 50 use chatbots, against about four in ten aged 50 to 64, per Pew's age breakdown.
- Generative AI platforms averaged 9.5 billion monthly web visits from June 2025 to May 2026, up 70%, with unique visitors up 57% to 655 million, according to Similarweb.
- App downloads for generative AI tools rose 58% to 4.4 billion over the same period, Similarweb reports.
- 65% of US adults at least sometimes see AI summaries in search results, and 45% see them often, per Pew's August 2025 survey.
- Only 9% of US adults get news from AI chatbots often or sometimes, and 75% never do, Pew reported.
People use chatbots to search and to work far more than to read news, which is why optimising for AI search is a buyer-question problem rather than a publishing problem.
ChatGPT statistics that matter for search
ChatGPT passed 1 billion weekly active users in 2026 and handles billions of prompts a day, yet it cites a source in fewer than 7% of prompts.
- ChatGPT has more than 1 billion weekly active users, per OpenAI's 31 August 2026 update.
- Weekly users passed 400 million in February 2025, Reuters reported, and 800 million by October 2025, per TechCrunch.
- Users send 2.5 billion prompts a day, 330 million from the US, up from 1 billion in December 2024, TechCrunch reported in July 2025.
- 44% of US adults use ChatGPT, including 61% of those aged 18 to 29 and 19% of those 65 and older, per Pew.
- 49% of messages are "asking", 40% "doing" and 11% "expressing", and about 30% of usage is work-related, per OpenAI's 1.5 million-conversation study.
- ChatGPT's share of worldwide generative AI web traffic fell from about 76% in June 2025 to roughly 53% by May 2026 while its visits stayed flat, Similarweb found.
- ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualised run rate in under 200 days with tens of thousands of advertisers, OpenAI said in August 2026.
- Roughly 26% of ChatGPT responses contain an ad, with about a third of ad impressions served in the first response of a session, per Similarweb.
Web search runs on every ChatGPT plan, and ChatGPT rewrites a question into targeted queries for third-party search providers, per OpenAI's help centre. That rewriting step is what getting cited by ChatGPT has to survive.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode statistics
AI Overviews reach 2.5 billion people a month and AI Mode passed 1 billion, which makes Google the largest AI search surface by a wide margin.
- AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, Sundar Pichai said at Google I/O on 19 May 2026.
- AI Mode surpassed 1 billion monthly active users within a year of launch, per the same keynote.
- AI Overviews reached 2 billion monthly users by July 2025, up from 1.5 billion a quarter earlier, across more than 200 countries and 40 languages, Digiday reported from the earnings call.
- In the US and India, AI Overviews drove over a 10% increase in Google usage for the query types that show them, Google said in May 2025.
- 18% of Google searches produced an AI summary in March 2025, across 68,879 searches by 900 US adults, per Pew.
- 53% of searches with 10 or more words triggered an AI summary, against 8% of one- or two-word searches, and 60% of question-word searches did, Pew found.
- 88% of AI summaries cited three or more sources, 1% cited a single source, and the median summary ran 67 words, per Pew.
- AI Overviews appear on more than 43% of US searches, Similarweb estimated in July 2026.
Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible, per its AI features documentation. The playbook for ranking in Google AI Overviews starts from that document.
Gemini, Perplexity and Claude statistics
Gemini's app passed 900 million monthly users and its web share tripled in a year, while Perplexity handled 780 million queries a month by mid-2025. Google, Similarweb, Pew and TechCrunch are the sources.
- The Gemini app passed 900 million monthly active users, up from 400 million a year earlier, with daily requests up more than seven times, per Google I/O 2026.
- Gemini's share of worldwide generative AI web traffic rose from under 9% to around 27 to 28% between June 2025 and May 2026, Similarweb reports.
- Claude's share rose from about 2% to close to 9%, and its worldwide app monthly active users grew roughly 1,318%, per Similarweb.
- Among US adults, 24% use Gemini, 17% Copilot, 14% Meta AI, 8% Grok and 6% Claude, per Pew.
- Perplexity received 780 million queries in May 2025 and was growing more than 20% month over month, its CEO told TechCrunch.
Perplexity has not published a comparable 2026 query figure, so any larger number is an estimate. The engine differences are why Perplexity and ChatGPT treat brand visibility differently.
AI referral traffic and click statistics
Clicks fall by roughly half when an AI summary appears, yet the visitors who do arrive from AI tools convert better than other traffic.
- Google users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, per Pew's browsing-panel study.
- Users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself on 1% of visits to pages that carried one, Pew found.
- 26% of visits to a search page with an AI summary ended the browsing session, against 16% without one, per Pew.
- Traffic to US retail sites from generative AI tools rose 693% year on year over the 2025 holiday season, with travel up 539%, financial services 266% and tech 120%, per Adobe Analytics.
- AI referrals converted 31% better than other traffic that season, spent 45% more time on site, viewed 13% more pages and were 33% less likely to bounce, Adobe reports.
- In July 2026, AI referral traffic to US retail sites was up 62% year on year and 1,219% against October 2024, converting 60% higher with 53% more revenue per visit, per Adobe data reported by Digital Commerce 360.
- Homepage referrals from ChatGPT rose from roughly 26 to 29% of its referral traffic to about 62 to 63% after the May 2026 link-format change, and held there, Similarweb found.
Items 1 to 3 describe the zero-click effect on brands; items 4 to 7 describe the traffic that survives it. Both are true at once.
Citation and source statistics
Fewer than 7% of ChatGPT prompts carry a citation, and the sources that do get cited cluster on a handful of platforms. Similarweb tracked the rate, Pew tracked the domains, and a quarter of scan data adds an engine-level view.
- Citation presence in US ChatGPT prompts rose from about 1.6% in June 2025 to roughly 6.8% by May 2026, per Similarweb.
- Travel and hospitality prompts carry a citation about 23% of the time and automotive about 20%, while professional services sits under 4%, Similarweb reports.
- Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of sources in Google AI summaries, against 17% of standard results, Pew found.
- 6% of AI summary sources were .gov sites against 2% of standard results, and news sites were 5% in both, per Pew.
- 53% of Americans who have seen AI summaries have at least some trust in them, but only 6% trust them a lot, per Pew.
- Across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude in one AEO category, youtube.com was the most cited domain with 118 citations (Gemini 62, Perplexity 56), then linkedin.com with 52 and reddit.com with 49, followed by industry publishers.
Data: Unveilr scans, 60 prompts, one AEO category, 16 Jun to 15 Sep 2026.
Item 6 is one category over one quarter, not a market study, but it agrees with Pew on YouTube and Reddit. Measuring AI visibility for your own brand means building the same table for your own prompts.
Marketer adoption statistics
95% of B2B marketers now use AI applications, and AI tools top the 2026 investment list.
- 95% of B2B marketers say their organisations use AI applications, and 45% plan to increase investment in AI marketing tools in 2026, the most-named area, per the Content Marketing Institute.
- 28% of B2B marketers experiment with AI agents, rising to 43% among the most advanced teams, the same report found.
- Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as users turn to AI chatbots, as reported by Search Engine Land.
- 39% of a broad set of US retailer homepages were not machine-readable for LLMs in July 2026, with apparel at 76% visibility and grocery at 59%, per Adobe data reported by Digital Commerce 360.
- ChatGPT Ads has more than 50 technology and measurement partners and is available in over 40 countries, OpenAI said in August 2026.
The Gartner figure is a forecast, not a measurement, and Google's reach numbers above suggest search volume moved into AI features rather than away from Google. Treat it as directional when it appears in a vendor deck.
How to read AI search statistics without misusing them
Compare a statistic only with another statistic of the same kind: a survey, a browsing panel, a traffic panel or a platform's own disclosure. The biggest errors on this topic come from mixing them.
Surveys, panels and platform disclosures
Pew's figures come from representative surveys of US adults or a 900-person browsing panel, so they describe behaviour, not global scale. Similarweb and Adobe measure traffic panels, strong on trends and weaker on absolute counts. OpenAI and Google report their own reach, the largest numbers available and never independently audited.
The two questions to ask before quoting a number
Ask what population the number describes and what date it carries. "44% use ChatGPT" is US adults in February 2026; "1 billion weekly users" is worldwide in August 2026, and the two cannot be divided into each other. The answer engine optimization work that follows depends on which engine, country and quarter you are looking at.
