What Zero-Click Search Means for Your Brand (2026)

Unveilr: what zero-click search means for your brand, and how to win the answer.

TL;DR

  • In early 2026, 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click (SparkToro/Similarweb).
  • AI Overviews cut top-result CTR by 58% (Ahrefs) and Pew found users click a link just 8% of the time when an AI summary appears.
  • Zero-click search shifts the goal from earning clicks to earning citations and being recommended inside AI answers.
  • Clicks still convert, but discovery increasingly happens before the click ever exists.

A zero-click search occurs when a search query results in information being presented on the search engine results page itself (SERP), without the user needing to proceed to a website. This gives the potential buyer an impression of the brand from the summary or snippet shown, helping them decide whether to visit the site.

This shifts everything. When most online searches do not result in a click, the metric that mattered for decades becomes obsolete, and organic traffic no longer indicates how many people actually see your brand. Instead, the new metric is how often you are referred to and quoted in the results users already see.

This guide explains what zero-click search is, calculates its size by 2026, shows how AI Overviews boost it, and shares how companies adjust without giving up on clicks that are still effective.

A zero-click search is an inquiry that is resolved without needing to visit any other site. The response is provided directly on the search results page, as a featured snippet, knowledge panel, local pack, AI Overview, or a related follow-up search that keeps the user on the same page.

The term existed before Artificial Intelligence. SparkToro has been tracking it since 2016 when approximately 45% of Google searches were categorized as zero-click searches. By 2019, the number rose to 49%.

The difference now is not in the concept but in the speed at which things are changing. Not every zero-click search represents a customer lost. If a person is checking the hours of a local business or doing a unit conversion, they never intended to be your customer anyway.

The problem is the growing number of sales and research queries that are resolved before the searcher makes it to your page.

If you are interested in the broader taxonomy of how AI-driven responses transform search, our introductory article on answer engine optimization outlines the topic.

How big is zero-click search in 2026?

In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of US Google searches did not lead to any click, according to the SparkToro clickstream study. In 2024, the figure stood at 60.45%. That is an increase of 7.5 percentage points in two years, the fastest jump in a decade.

The decade-long trend

When looking at the overall picture, the trend has been clearly defined. Zero-click share represented 45% in 2016 and increased to 49% in 2019. Now it has reached 68%, which means the clickless share has grown by about 23 percentage points in 10 years.

Where the surviving clicks go

A 2024 study from SparkToro shows where the surviving clicks actually go. Out of every 1,000 Google searches in the US, merely 360 clicks landed on non-Google-owned websites. A significant proportion of clicks, roughly 30 percent, went to websites owned by Google itself, like YouTube and Google Maps.

In the EU, the results were marginally better, as 374 clicks landed on external websites for every 1,000 Google searches. Even so, around two-thirds of Google searches trail back to the company's own ecosystem.

A prominent caveat is worth noting. These panels under-report some behaviour, including insufficient iOS coverage and ad-blocker influence on paid click-through rates, and they combine data over the years. Even so, the trend is continuous across all panels and throughout all the years.

Looking further out, Gartner has projected that traditional search engine volume will fall 25% by 2026 as users shift to AI chatbots and other virtual agents.

How AI Overviews accelerate zero-click

AI overviews are the most significant contributor to the data indicated for 2026. They appear in over 20% of search queries. When AI overviews are present, users are much less likely to click on any of the search results.

The click-through impact

A Pew Research Center analysis of 68,879 real Google searches from March 2025 makes the impact clear. When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result only 8% of the time. Without a summary, they clicked a regular result 15% of the time.

Clicks on links inside the summary itself happened in only 1% of visits. Users were also more likely to end the search session entirely when a summary appeared, rising to 26% from 16%.

A separate ranking-focused analysis found a similar effect. In a December 2025 study of 300,000 keywords, researchers found that an AI Overview corresponded to a 58% decline in CTR for the top-ranking page.

The CTR for the number-one position on AI Overview keywords dropped from 0.073 in December 2023 to 0.016 in December 2025. An earlier April 2025 version of that study put the decline at around 34.5%, so the impact has almost doubled in a year as novelty faded.

The upside: more citation slots

Pew also surfaced an upside for strategy. The average AI summary is 67 words long, and 88% of summaries cited three or more sources. Being one of those cited sources is now more valuable than ever.

Our guide to Google AI Overviews explains how those citations are chosen.

What zero-click does to brand traffic and discovery

The primary consequence is discernible: fewer sessions generated from search. Second-order consequences are much more relevant.

The measurement gap

During the click age, discovery was measured by a visit. If someone knew about you, they arrived on your site and metrics recorded it.

In the zero-click age, a buyer can learn your name, your positioning, and a rival's counterargument inside an AI reply. They then build a shortlist without producing a single session you could measure.

This leads to a measurement gap. Independent clickstream analysis indicates Google's referral share to thousands of professionally managed websites fell by about 22% between June 2025 and May 2026.

If brand health is measured only by traffic, a brand can look like it is losing ground. In reality, it may be earning more mentions while generating less traffic.

Cited vs ignored: the real trade-off

There is a simple trade-off, however. When you lose a click to an AI summary that recommends you, it is not the same as losing a customer. Brand impressions within answers still build consideration and generate branded search and direct visits later.

But losing a click to an answer that quotes a competitor, or which does not quote anything at all, is a real loss in both traffic and minds.

Working out which of the two is happening is now a central task, and it is why tracking your AI share of voice matters more than counting sessions on your website.

The five ways zero-click changes brand strategy

Zero-click search does not eliminate strategy; it redefines it. The shift plays out across five moves, from what you measure to how you measure it and what you aim for.

1. From clicks to references

The goal is to become the source the AI response mentions or links to. Pew found that 88% of summaries cite three or more sources, so being one of them is the target.

2. From keywords to prompts

Users now reach AI engines by typing full-sentence queries. Pew found that 53% of ten-word queries returned an AI summary, versus only 8% of one or two-word queries. Optimizing now means writing for the conversational prompts people actually type.

3. One engine, multiple interfaces

Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini provide information differently from each other. Visibility should be monitored per interface rather than evaluated as a single ranking.

4. From pages to answer-bearing content

Content delivered in a clean, extractable, well-organised answer format is easier for a machine to lift and credit than long copy that buries the point.

5. From traffic dashboards to visibility dashboards

When sessions understate real discovery, you need another signal for how often and how positively your brand appears in AI answers.

Here is how the eras compare across the metrics that count:

Dimension Click era (SEO) Zero-click era (AEO)
Primary goal Rank #1, earn the click Be cited in the answer
Core metric Organic sessions, CTR Citation share, mentions, sentiment
Query unit Keywords Conversational prompts
Surface Google SERP AIO, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini
Success signal Traffic growth Share of voice in answers
Content shape Ranking pages Extractable, attributable answers

The three main surfaces also treat clicks differently, so an ignored click can still create a brand effect:

Surface How it answers Click behavior
Google AI Overview Summary above blue links, cites 3+ sources Traditional-result clicks fall to ~8% (Pew, 2025)
ChatGPT Conversational answer with inline citations Sends <1% of traffic out (industry estimate)
Perplexity Answer with visible numbered sources Citation-forward, but click-through remains low

Is zero-click killing SEO? The honest verdict

Not yet, but it is putting an end to the SEO method that regards rankings and traffic as essentially the same. This difference is very important.

Where clicks still win

Clicks still matter, and dismissing them is just hype. At the bottom of the funnel, transactional queries like buying something or signing up still send people to a real destination.

Leaving the SERP after checking prices or completing a purchase is bound to happen. In those cases, classic SEO and a strong website still matter, clicks included.

Where answers now win

What has changed is the upper and mid-funnel levels. Queries of definitional, comparative, and research types can now be satisfied within an answer.

If your brand is absent from that answer, you miss the moment discovery happens. That is why AEO vs SEO vs GEO is less a competition than a division of labor.

SEO takes the click when intent is transactional. Answer engine optimization earns the mention when intent is informational.

The honest view is not that SEO no longer works. It is that SEO is now one part of discovery, and zero-click answers have taken over another part. Brands that treat the two as complementary and measure both tend to win.

Brands that keep optimizing only for a shrinking pool of clicks will lose visibility while their rankings hold steady. If you are picking a tool to measure the new layer, our guide to AI visibility tools can help.

Common Zero-Click Mistakes Brands Make

The costliest zero-click mistakes are measurement and strategy errors, not ranking losses. Brands that keep optimizing for a click fewer people make watch visibility erode while their rankings look fine.

  • Judging health by traffic alone. Falling sessions can mask rising brand mentions inside answers; measure citations, not just clicks.
  • Tracking one surface. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini each cite differently, so a single rank number hides the real picture.
  • Optimizing only for transactional queries. The discovery that moved into answers is upper- and mid-funnel, and skipping it cedes the shortlist.
  • Ignoring conversational prompts. Long, full-sentence questions trigger AI summaries far more often than one- or two-word keywords.
  • Publishing un-extractable pages. Long narratives that bury the point give models nothing clean to lift and attribute.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage of searches are zero-click?

In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click, according to SparkToro clickstream data. That is up from about 60% in 2024 and roughly 49% in 2019. The share has grown by around 23 percentage points over the last decade, driven largely by AI answers and on-page features.

Are zero-click searches bad?

Not always. Queries like store hours, conversions, or quick facts were never going to convert, so resolving them on the page is fine. The risk is commercial and research queries that end before a buyer reaches any site. A zero-click answer that recommends a brand still builds consideration; one that cites a competitor is a real loss.

Do AI Overviews reduce traffic?

Yes. Pew Research found users clicked a traditional result in only 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one. A separate study of 300,000 keywords measured a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview was present. Both effects push traffic down for informational queries where summaries commonly appear.

How do you rank in zero-click search?

You optimize to be cited rather than merely to rank. That means covering the conversational prompts users ask, structuring content as clear extractable answers, earning authority signals, and being present across multiple answer surfaces. Since summaries typically cite three or more sources, the target is inclusion in that citation set.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO optimizes to rank a page and earn a click on the results list. AEO, or answer engine optimization, optimizes to be quoted, cited, and recommended inside the answer itself. SEO still wins transactional clicks; AEO wins the informational discovery that increasingly resolves without a click. Most brands need both.

How is AI search optimization measured?

Instead of sessions and rankings, it uses visibility metrics: how often a brand is mentioned in AI answers, its share of voice against competitors, which sources get cited, and the sentiment of those mentions. These are tracked per surface, since each engine assembles and attributes answers differently.

Does zero-click search affect every industry equally?

No. Categories heavy in informational and comparison queries feel it most, because those are the queries AI summaries answer best. Transactional and local-intent journeys still generate clicks to destinations. The mix of query types in a category determines how much discovery moves into the answer layer.

Will clicks disappear completely?

Unlikely. Bottom-funnel actions like buying, booking, and signing up require leaving the answer for a real destination, so those clicks persist. What shrinks is the click's role in early discovery. The realistic outcome is fewer, higher-intent clicks alongside far more brand impressions that happen inside answers.

Where Unveilr fits

Once the click is gone, the question is simple: is your brand part of the answer, and is it recommended? Unveilr was built for exactly that.

It runs a continuous loop. Unveilr scans what your customers ask across the major AI platforms, detects where you are mentioned and where you are absent or losing to competitors, updates your content and technical setup to close those gaps, then re-scans to confirm progress.

The goal is visibility without the click, delivered through prompt tracking, citation monitoring, humanized content, and technical AEO. In one case study, a D2C brand moved from the ninth most-cited domain to the single most-cited source in AI answers, with its ChatGPT visibility rising from 3.3 percent to 44.7 percent.

This does not replace SEO. It simply ensures that when discovery happens inside an answer, your brand is in the running. Learn how to get cited by ChatGPT and the other engines.
