Quick Answer: AEO earns your brand a place inside the AI answer itself, whereas SEO earns a ranked link the searcher has to click. SEO optimises pages for keywords on Google's results page; AEO optimises them for prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. The crawlers overlap, the objectives do not.
SEO and AEO are judged on different screens. An SEO win is position one on a results page with ten links; an AEO win is being the source an engine quotes, or the brand it names, in a paragraph that may show no links at all.
That single difference cascades into nine practical ones, from what you write to how you count success. This page lays them out two ways: the three-way comparison with GEO adds the generative-engine angle, and the SaaS budget split covers where the money goes.
What is the one difference between AEO and SEO
The deciding difference is where your brand appears: SEO puts a link on a results page, AEO puts your brand inside the answer. Everything a searcher sees on a classic results page is a pointer to somewhere else. Everything an answer engine shows is the destination.
That is why the two disciplines can pull in opposite directions on the same page. An SEO page is built to earn the click by promising the answer; an AEO page gives the answer away in sentence one.
Pew found Google users clicked a result link on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, per its July 2025 browsing study.
AEO vs SEO: the nine differences
AEO and SEO differ on objective, unit, surface, retrieval, content shape, signals, measurement, traffic and volatility. The table carries all nine.
| # | Axis | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Objective | Rank a URL on a results page | Be named or cited inside a generated answer |
| 2 | Unit of work | A keyword and its variants | A prompt, often a full sentence or question |
| 3 | Surface | Ten links, snippets, ads, packs | One synthesised answer with a few citations |
| 4 | How a page is found | Crawled, indexed, ranked by relevance and authority | Retrieved by fan-out sub-queries, then quoted or ignored |
| 5 | Content shape | Comprehensive, keyword-mapped, built to earn the click | Answer-first, extractable, built to be quoted |
| 6 | Off-page signals | Backlinks, domain authority | Consistent entity facts, mentions on cited domains |
| 7 | Measurement | Rank, impressions, CTR in Search Console | Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice on the live engine |
| 8 | Traffic outcome | Clicks proportional to position | Fewer clicks, higher intent, brand named before the visit |
| 9 | Volatility | Algorithm updates, weeks apart | Model launches and daily answer variance |
The three that change your week
Rows 2, 5 and 7 are the ones that alter a content team's routine. You research prompts instead of keywords, write the answer before the argument, and read the engine itself instead of a rank tracker. The other six follow from those.
How each one finds and ranks a page
SEO finds a page through a crawl, an index and a ranking pass; AEO retrieves it in response to a live question and decides whether to quote it. The first is a standing order, the second is a live lookup.
The SEO path
Googlebot crawls, Google indexes, and the ranking systems order the index against a keyword. Your page is scored before anyone searches, and it keeps its position until the next crawl or the next update. Search Console shows the whole chain in impressions, position and clicks.
The AEO path
An answer engine takes the prompt, breaks it into sub-queries, runs them, reads the returned pages and writes one response. Google's documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources", per its AI features guide. OpenAI says ChatGPT search "leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners", per its launch post.
Your page is evaluated at the moment of the question, against whatever else the fan-out returned. There is no standing position to defend, only a passage that either gets used or does not. How AI answer engines choose what to cite is the fuller mechanism.
What each one rewards on the page
SEO rewards a page that covers a keyword thoroughly; AEO rewards a page that answers a question in one liftable passage. Both can live in the same document, but the order of the content flips.
What SEO wants
Breadth across the keyword cluster, internal links, a title that earns the click, and enough authority for the ranking systems to trust the domain. Length is tolerated because the reader arrives by choice and can scroll.
What AEO wants
A question in the heading, a complete answer in the first sentence, a figure with a source attached, and a table or list an engine can reproduce. Length is tolerated only after the answer, because the engine reads the passage, not the page. Structuring content so an engine can lift it is the practical version of this rule.
Where the two agree
Google states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode", per the same guide. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, nothing more. Crawlability, server-rendered text and structured data that matches the visible page serve both disciplines.
How you measure each one
SEO is measured in a rank tracker and Search Console; AEO is measured by asking the engine and recording what it says. The two readings do not come from the same tool and rarely move together.
SEO measurement
Position, impressions and clicks per query, over 28-day windows. Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode appearances inside the "Web" search type in the Performance report, so a Search Console rise can include AI surfaces without labelling them.
AEO measurement
Run each tracked prompt on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews on a fixed schedule and log three separate outcomes: named, cited, linked. A brand can be named without a citation and cited without a link. How to measure AI visibility sets out the sheet, and what zero-click answers do to brand traffic explains why clicks understate the effect.
Why the readings drift apart
A page can hold position three for a keyword while the AI answer for the matching prompt names two rivals and skips it. The rank is a property of the index; the citation is a property of one retrieval run, and it can change between two runs on the same day.
Do you still need SEO if you do AEO
Yes. AEO on Google's surfaces depends on the SEO fundamentals, and AEO on ChatGPT depends on the same crawlable, indexable page that SEO built. The relationship is a dependency, not a replacement.
Where SEO still carries the load
Indexing, site architecture, page speed, internal links and the crawl budget that gets a new page fetched at all. Google's guide lists exactly those fundamentals as the route into AI features, with no special files or markup required. Ranking in AI Overviews starts from an indexed page for that reason.
Where AEO earns its own budget
Prompt research, answer-first rewrites of the pages that already rank, entity consistency across the web, and a scan schedule that reads the live engines. None of those appear in a classic SEO scope, and none of them move a rank tracker.
What to do first
Take the ten pages that already rank for buyer keywords and rewrite their openings as direct answers, keeping the rest intact. Then track the matching prompts on the engines for four weeks. That test costs nothing in rankings and shows, page by page, whether the answer surface will quote you.
